Doyle Brunson - the godfather

No name carries more weight. Doyle 'Texas Dolly' Brunson won back-to-back WSOP Main Events in 1976 and 1977 and wrote Super/System, the book that taught a generation how to play winning poker. He competed at the highest stakes into his eighties. The 10-2 hand he won both titles with is now known simply as 'the Doyle Brunson'.

Phil Ivey - the all-rounder

Widely regarded as the most naturally gifted player of the modern era, Phil Ivey has ten WSOP bracelets and a fearsome reputation in the biggest cash games in the world. What sets Ivey apart is range: he is elite at no-limit hold'em, pot-limit Omaha and mixed games alike, and his reads on opponents are the stuff of legend.

Daniel Negreanu - the ambassador

'Kid Poker' is famous for an almost supernatural ability to put opponents on exact hands, and for being the game's most visible ambassador. A six-time bracelet winner and two-time WSOP Player of the Year, Negreanu has banked among the highest live tournament earnings in history while doing more than anyone to popularise the game.

Phil Hellmuth - the record breaker

Love him or hate him, Phil Hellmuth holds the record for the most WSOP bracelets - the single most impressive longevity stat in poker. 'The Poker Brat' is famous for his table tantrums, but the results are undeniable: he became the youngest Main Event champion of his time in 1989 and has kept winning for over three decades.

Stu Ungar - the tragic genius

Many old-timers insist Stu Ungar was the most talented player who ever lived. He won the WSOP Main Event three times, the last in a famous 1997 comeback, and was so dominant at gin rummy that opponents refused to play him. His career and life were cut short by addiction - a cautionary tale alongside the brilliance.

The modern greats

The online era produced its own legends. Players like Justin Bonomo and Bryn Kenney have topped the all-time money list thanks to high-roller tournaments with enormous buy-ins. Vanessa Selbst stands as the most successful female tournament player in history. And a generation of solver-trained pros has pushed the technical ceiling of the game higher than Brunson's era could have imagined.

What separates the greats

Across eras, the best share the same traits: relentless aggression balanced with discipline, sharp bankroll management, and the emotional control to handle brutal variance. Talent gets you to the table; temperament keeps you there. The legends above all combined a gift for the game with the patience to survive its swings.
